Choosing a Countertop Material
What is the difference between quartz and quartzite?
Quartz is an engineered surface made from quartz minerals and resins. It offers a wide range of colors and patterns, is nonporous, and does not require sealing.
Quartzite is a natural stone with unique veining and variations in every slab. It is generally more heat resistant than quartz, but may require periodic sealing to help protect against stains.
Both are durable countertop options. Our Sales and Design Consultants can help you choose the best fit for your style and everyday needs.
How do granite, marble, quartz, quartzite, and porcelain compare?
Each material offers a different combination of appearance, durability, and maintenance needs:
Granite: A durable natural stone with distinctive colors and patterns. It resists heat and scratches well and may need periodic sealing.
Marble: A natural stone known for its elegant veining. It is softer and more susceptible to scratches, stains, and etching from acidic substances, so it requires more careful maintenance.
Quartz: An engineered surface available in a wide range of designs. It is nonporous and does not require sealing, but needs protection from high heat and is generally intended for indoor use.
Quartzite: A hard natural stone with unique veining. It offers excellent scratch and heat resistance and may need periodic sealing.
Porcelain: A manufactured surface that resists heat, stains, and scratches without requiring sealing. Many products are suitable for outdoor use, though edges can be vulnerable to chipping.
Our Sales and Design Consultants can help you compare options and choose a material that fits your space, style, and maintenance preferences.
Which materials are best for a busy family kitchen?
Quartz, granite, and quartzite are all great options for a busy family kitchen. Quartz is especially convenient because it is nonporous, easy to clean, and does not require sealing. Granite and quartzite offer excellent durability and heat resistance, though they may need periodic sealing.
Porcelain is another durable, low-maintenance option, while marble requires more care because it is more susceptible to scratches, stains, and etching. Our Sales and Design Consultants can help you choose a material that fits your family’s daily routine and style.
Which materials are best for bathrooms and laundry rooms?
Quartz and porcelain are excellent choices for bathrooms and laundry rooms because they are nonporous, easy to clean, and do not require sealing. Granite and quartzite are also durable options, though they may need periodic sealing to help protect against stains.
Marble is a beautiful choice for bathroom vanities, but it requires more care because some cleaners and personal care products can cause staining or etching. Our Sales and Design Consultants can help you choose a material that fits your space and maintenance preferences.
Which countertop materials can be used outdoors?
Granite and porcelain rated for outdoor use are popular choices because they handle sunlight and temperature changes well. Certain quartzites may also be suitable, depending on the specific stone.
Most quartz is intended for indoor use, as sunlight can cause discoloration over time. For Colorado’s outdoor conditions, our Sales and Design Consultants can help you select a material suited to your space, exposure, and maintenance needs.
Design
What countertop edge profiles can I choose from?
We offer a wide variety of countertop edge profiles, from simple, clean edges to decorative custom designs. Bring inspiration photos to your showroom appointment, and our Sales and Design team will help you find the right option for your selected material and project.
What countertop thickness options are available?
Most of our stone countertops are available in 2 cm or 3 cm thicknesses, while porcelain is available in 12 mm or 20 mm. Available thicknesses vary by material and selection, and our Sales and Design team can help you choose the right option for your project.
Can you create a waterfall island?
Yes! A waterfall island extends the countertop material down one or both sides of the island to the floor, creating a cohesive look that showcases the stone’s colors and veining. Our team can help you select the material and plan the layout, including vein alignment where possible.
Can I review the slab layout before fabrication?
Yes, you can review your slab layout before fabrication for an additional charge. This allows you to see how the patterns and veining will be positioned within your countertop design. Let your Sales and Design Consultant know if you’d like to include this option.
Templating
What is countertop templating, and why is it necessary?
Countertop templating is the process of taking precise measurements of your space before your countertops are fabricated. It captures the layout of your cabinets, walls, sink, cooktop, and other details that affect the fit.
These measurements guide how your material is cut, helping ensure accurate sizing, proper cutout placement, and a smooth installation.
What needs to be installed before the template appointment?
All cabinets must be installed and secured before your template appointment. If your project includes a farmhouse sink, it must also be installed in its final position so we can take accurate measurements for your countertops.
Do I need to be present for templating?
Yes, a decision maker must be on site during the template appointment to confirm project details, answer questions, and approve any decisions needed before fabrication.
When do you need my sink, faucet, and appliance details?
We need your sink, faucet, and appliance details before your template appointment so we can plan accurate measurements, cutouts, and placement for your countertops.
How long does the countertop process typically take?
The countertop process generally takes about 7–10 days from your template appointment to installation. Timing may vary depending on your material selection and project details.
Installation and Project Preparation
How should I prepare my home for installation day?
Before installation day, empty your drawers and cabinets, clear a path to the installation area, and move any appliances that could block access. This gives our installation team room to safely bring in and install your countertops.
How long does countertop installation usually take?
Countertop installation generally takes 2–4 hours, but larger or more complex projects may take a full day. Our team can provide a more specific timeframe based on the size and details of your project.
Do you remove and dispose of existing countertops?
Yes, we can remove and dispose of your existing countertops for an additional charge. Let your Sales and Design Consultant know if you’d like this service included in your quote.
Who disconnects and reconnects the plumbing?
Plumbing can be disconnected and reconnected by the homeowner, a licensed plumber you hire, or Weaver Stone Company’s licensed plumber. Let your Sales and Design Consultant know if you’d like us to coordinate this service.
Do I need to be home during installation?
We prefer that a decision maker is on site during installation to answer questions and confirm any final details, but it is not required. If you won’t be home, please coordinate access and any necessary instructions with our team ahead of time.
How soon can I use my countertops after installation?
You can use your countertops immediately after installation unless our team specifies otherwise. We’ll let you know if any areas need additional time before use.
Sinks, Backsplashes & Specialty Projects
Can I reuse my existing sink or faucet?
We do not recommend reusing your existing sink or faucet. Choosing new fixtures helps ensure compatibility with your new countertops and reduces the risk of issues caused by wear or damage during removal. Our team can help you coordinate your selections before templating and fabrication.
Can you fabricate sink, faucet, and cooktop cutouts?
Yes! We fabricate sink, faucet, and cooktop cutouts to fit the fixtures and appliances selected for your project. Our team will need the specific model information and any required templates or specifications before fabrication to ensure accurate sizing and placement.
Can the countertop material also be used as a backsplash?
Yes! Countertop materials can also be used for a backsplash, whether you prefer a short backsplash or a full-height design. You can use the same material for a cohesive look or choose a second color that complements your countertops and ties together your cabinets, flooring, and other finishes. Our team can help you find the right combination for your space.
Do you fabricate full-height backsplashes?
Yes! We fabricate full-height backsplashes that extend from your countertops to your upper cabinets or another desired height. You can use the same material as your countertops or select a complementary color to tie your space together. Our team will help you plan the layout, seams, and outlet cutouts.
Can stone be used for shower walls, tub surrounds, or fireplaces?
Yes! Stone can create beautiful shower walls, tub surrounds, and fireplace surrounds, showcasing the material’s unique colors and veining. The right material depends on the application, including exposure to moisture and heat. Our Sales and Design Consultants can help you select a suitable option and plan the design for your space.
Can translucent stone be backlit?
Yes! Certain translucent stones can be backlit to highlight their natural colors, veining, and depth. This can create a beautiful feature for islands, backsplashes, shower walls, and other statement areas. Translucency varies by material and slab, so our team can help you explore suitable options and discuss the lighting and installation requirements.
Do you offer remnants for smaller projects or vanity tops?
Yes! We offer remnants that can be a great option for vanity tops and other smaller projects. Available materials, colors, and sizes vary, and our team can help you find a piece that fits your design and project dimensions.
